Electrical equipment is rated for ambient conditions that assume a temperate climate. Nevada is not that. An attic here routinely exceeds 140F in July, outdoor equipment sits in direct UV for fourteen hours a day, and fine dust gets everywhere. All three shorten the life of things that should last decades.
Heat derates everything
Conductors are rated to carry a certain current at a certain ambient temperature. As ambient rises, that capacity falls. A cable run through a 140F attic is carrying its load with far less margin than the same cable in a 75F basement in Ohio. This is why circuits that were fine for twenty years start tripping in August.
It also affects the panel. A load center on a west-facing exterior wall in full afternoon sun runs hot, and breakers in a hot panel trip earlier than their rating suggests.
What fails first
- Attic junction box connections. Wire nuts on conductors that heat and cool daily eventually loosen. Loose means resistance, resistance means heat, and the cycle accelerates.
- Outdoor receptacles and covers. UV makes plastic covers brittle. They crack, water gets in, and the GFCI starts tripping every time the sprinklers run.
- Conduit and cable jackets. Non-UV-rated conduit chalks, cracks and exposes conductors. Common on DIY-added patio and pool circuits.
- Photocells and outdoor lighting. Heat and dust shorten their life dramatically compared with rated figures.
- AC disconnect boxes. Sit outside, get hot, get dusty, and are frequently the actual reason a "broken" AC unit will not start.
Dust is not cosmetic
Fine desert dust accumulates inside panels, disconnects and outdoor boxes. It is mildly conductive when damp, it insulates connections against cooling, and it clogs the vents on anything that has them. A panel that has not been opened in fifteen years in a dusty area is worth an inspection.
Monsoon season
Summer storms bring three specific problems. Wind takes down service masts and weatherheads, driving rain gets into boxes that have failed covers, and lightning-adjacent grid switching sends surges down the line. The first two are emergency calls. The third is preventable with panel-mounted whole home surge protection, which costs considerably less than replacing a refrigerator control board, a furnace board, a garage door opener and a television in the same afternoon.
A pre-summer checklist
- Open no panels yourself, but do feel the panel cover. Warm is not normal.
- Walk the exterior. Any cracked outlet covers, exposed conductors, or conduit that has gone chalky and brittle?
- Press the test button on every GFCI. If it does not trip and reset cleanly, it needs replacing.
- Check the AC disconnect box outside is intact and the cover is on.
- Note any circuit that tripped last summer. It will do it again, and it is cheaper to diagnose in April.
- Consider surge protection before storm season rather than after.
The bill side of heat
Cooling dominates the Nevada summer bill, but lighting is the load most easily reduced. A house still running halogen or older CFL fixtures throughout is burning power to make heat that the AC then has to remove. LED retrofits cut both sides of that. In commercial spaces with high bay fixtures running twelve hours a day, the arithmetic is even more obvious, which is why most of our commercial lighting retrofits pay for themselves faster than owners expect.
Worth an inspection?
If your home is over twenty years old and nobody has looked at the panel or the outdoor circuits in that time, yes. We check terminations, look for heat signatures, test GFCI and AFCI protection, and tell you what is genuinely urgent versus what can wait a year.
