Lighting is rarely the biggest line on a Nevada power bill. Cooling is. But lighting is the load you can change in an afternoon, and in a desert climate there is a second benefit people forget: every watt of old lighting becomes heat your AC then pays to remove.
The arithmetic
A halogen downlight draws around 50 watts. An equivalent LED draws roughly 8 to 12. Multiply by the number of fixtures and the hours they run. In a home with thirty recessed cans running four hours a day, that is a meaningful annual difference, before counting the cooling load you are no longer generating.
In commercial spaces the case is far stronger. Warehouse high bay fixtures running twelve hours a day are the fastest payback in the building. Most of our commercial retrofits are driven by that number alone.
Retrofit lamps, retrofit kits, or new fixtures?
- Swap the bulb. Cheapest, instant. Works where the existing fixture and trim are fine. Beam pattern may differ from what you are used to.
- Retrofit kit. Replaces the trim and the lamp as one unit in an existing can. Better light distribution, cleaner look, no ceiling work.
- New canless LED fixtures. Thin housings that install directly into the ceiling. Best light quality and control, and the right choice if you are adding fixtures rather than replacing them.
Why your new LEDs flicker
Almost always the dimmer. Older dimmers were designed for an incandescent load of several hundred watts. An LED fixture draws a fraction of that, and the dimmer cannot regulate properly at that load, so you get flicker, buzz, or a dead zone at the bottom of the range.
The fix is an LED-rated dimmer matched to the fixtures, plus keeping the fixtures on one circuit consistent with each other. Mixing three brands of LED on one dimmer is asking for trouble. If it persists after that, there may be a neutral or connection issue worth investigating.
Colour temperature matters more than people think
2700K is the warm, yellowish light of an incandescent bulb. 3000K is slightly crisper and works well in kitchens and bathrooms. 4000K and above reads as cold and clinical in a living room but is right for garages, workshops and task areas.
Pick one temperature per space and stick with it. A room with three different colour temperatures looks wrong even to people who cannot say why. Also check the CRI figure. Below 90, skin tones and finishes look flat.
Where lighting actually improves a room
One ceiling fixture in the middle of a room lights the floor and leaves the corners dark. Layered lighting works better:
- Recessed or ceiling light for general level
- Under cabinet lighting so you are not working in your own shadow at the counter
- Wall sconces or lamps to lift the vertical surfaces
- Dimmers throughout, so one room serves both cooking and evening
Outside
Desert landscaping looks completely different lit from below. Uplighting on a specimen tree or agave does more for a yard at night than any number of floodlights. And for security, a well-aimed fixture that lights the approach is more useful than a glaring flood that destroys your own night vision and annoys the neighbours. Motion sensing with a sensible timeout beats leaving everything on until dawn.
Getting it done
Recessed lighting cost depends on ceiling access, insulation, and whether we are adding a new switch leg or using an existing one. A room with accessible attic above is the straightforward case. We quote the room flat before cutting any holes. Details on the lighting installation page.
