A GFCI is the outlet with the test and reset buttons. It does something a breaker does not: it compares the current flowing out on the hot with the current returning on the neutral, and if those differ by a tiny amount, roughly five thousandths of an amp, it cuts power in milliseconds.
That difference means current is leaving the circuit somewhere. Through a damaged cord, through water, or through a person. A standard breaker will not notice that, because the total current may still be well under its rating. The GFCI exists specifically to catch what the breaker cannot.
Where they are required
Requirements have expanded over the years, but generally you need GFCI protection at:
- Kitchen countertop receptacles
- Bathrooms
- Garages and accessory buildings
- Outdoors, including patios, pools and spas
- Laundry areas and near sinks
- Crawlspaces and unfinished basements
- Boathouses and areas around water features
If your home predates these rules, nothing forces you to retrofit. But adding GFCI protection is one of the cheapest meaningful safety upgrades available, and it is a small job. See outlet and switch installation.
Why yours keeps tripping
It is catching a real fault
Most likely with outdoor circuits, especially after rain or sprinkler cycles. Water in a box, a degraded cover, or a damaged cord on something plugged in outside. Unplug everything on the circuit and reset. If it holds, plug items back one at a time and you will find the culprit.
The device has failed
GFCIs have a finite life and Nevada is hard on them. Heat, dust and years of UV on an outdoor unit degrade the internal electronics. A GFCI that trips with nothing plugged in, or that will not reset at all, is often just worn out. They are inexpensive to replace.
Too many devices downstream
One GFCI can protect a whole string of downstream receptacles. Each has a small amount of natural leakage. Add enough of them plus a long cable run and the cumulative leakage can approach the trip threshold, giving you nuisance trips with no single cause. Splitting the circuit fixes it.
A shared or crossed neutral
In older homes with modified wiring, neutrals sometimes get shared between circuits. A GFCI cannot balance current correctly when that happens and will trip. This one needs proper electrical troubleshooting, not a replacement device.
Test them monthly
Press test. Power should cut. Press reset. Power should return. If test does nothing, the device is not protecting you and needs replacing. This takes thirty seconds and almost nobody does it.
GFCI versus AFCI
Different jobs. GFCI catches current escaping to ground, protecting people. AFCI detects the signature of arcing, protecting against fires from damaged cables and loose connections. Bedrooms and living areas commonly require AFCI protection, and dual-function devices covering both are now standard in new work.
Outdoor outlets specifically
An outdoor receptacle needs a weather-resistant device and an in-use cover, the bubble type that keeps water out with a cord plugged in. The flip-up flat covers only protect when nothing is plugged in, which is precisely when you do not need protection. We replace a lot of those.
If a GFCI in your home trips repeatedly and unplugging things does not stop it, get the circuit tested rather than repeatedly resetting it.
